Team Chaos Prepares to Take the Field

For the past few weeks, the new Team Chaos Softball Team has been holding regular nightly practices in preparation for next week’s season opener. These practices have been closed to the media, as the team uses them to work out the kinks of what is certain to be a winning formula.
“Just like every team, we’ve had some early challenges,” said Head Coach, Kacy Manning. “We came into spring training with just a few minor issues to iron out. Like who would play each position, settling on a regular lineup, and teaching a few of our players the finer points of the game. All of our players have virtually unlimited potential. All they need to do to bring out their talents is learn how to catch…and throw…and hit. Other than that, the sky’s the limit.
The team is pulling out all the stops to ensure that every player reaches their full potential this season. Recognizing that this will be the first softball season for this group of players, management has been bringing in a variety of recognized experts to address the team and provide advanced training on some key softball skills. Speakers have included legendary sports figures hall-of-famer Bob Uecker, the actor who played the head coach in the movie Major League, and former pitching phenom Syd Finch.
Recent session topics have included “Lefty or Righty – Which One are You?” “Covering All the Bases – 1-2-3-Home!” and “Intro to Hitting – How to Hold a Bat.” Chaos players are obviously taking this very seriously, as many have been seen writing copious notes during each training session.
While no one is sure how the team will adjust to this new sport, one thing is certain. Loyal Team Chaos fans from around the world are excited to see the team kick off the season, as they take on the Band of Misfits next Thursday under the lights at historic Christopher Fields in Westminster, CO. The game will not be televised in all areas (currently it is being blacked out throughout all of North America), so be sure to tune into your weekly Affiliate Newsletter next Friday for a complete game recap!

CPA Empire® Breakaway Conference Update
CPA Empire® Breakaway Conference
August 7-8, 2008
The Breakaway Conference is only a few months away and we are hard at work making sure this year’s event is the best one yet. In the upcoming weeks, we will be letting everyone know more about some of the great networking activities and educational sessions we have planned for the conference.
This week, we are excited to announce our keynote speaker for the Breakaway Conference 2008. Declan Dunn, founder of Dunn Direct Marketing and one of the most sought after speakers in the industry, will deliver this year’s opening address discussing the growing influence of social media on affiliate marketing.
“We are thrilled to have Declan deliver our keynote address and get the Breakaway off to a great start with his incredible enthusiasm and industry knowledge,” said Steven Richter, President and General Counsel of Media Breakaway. “Declan played an integral part in making last year’s conference such a huge success and everyone in attendance is in for a great experience again this year.”
Last year, attendance at the Breakaway grew by over 50% from our inaugural event in 2006. In 2008, the conference will continue to grow, but only slightly. “Based on feedback from our attendees at the past two conferences, we don’t plan on dramatically increasing the number of people at this year’s event,” said Richter. “Our affiliates told us they really appreciate the intimate nature of the Breakaway, which let’s them feel comfortable sharing information and helping each other become more successful. With that in mind, we plan on keeping attendance limited to maintain this exclusive environment.”
Stay tuned to your weekly Affiliate Newsletter in the weeks ahead for more news about the Breakaway Conference. Don’t forget that the Earn Your Way to the Breakaway Contest runs until the end of this month! For more information on how you can earn a trip to Denver to attend the conference, click here.
We hope to see you in Denver this August!

Riding the Recession
Whether or not all the experts agree if we are in a recession, it’s safe to say that the U.S. is in the middle of an economic downturn. Home sales and the stock market are down – unemployment and gas prices are up. What can you do to make sure you ride through the current economic climate with your revenue intact?
Remember that consumers will still spend money online – they just may spend it on different products and services. Look for offers that are “recession proof” or that actually perform better when times are tough. With so many consumers facing a credit crisis, debt relief and other financial offers may start performing better than ever. The foreclosure market opens up a tremendous opportunity for investors, so certain real estate offers could also generate plenty of responses. When the economy is bad, many consumers will be looking for low-cost opportunities to boost their spirits, so various entertainment offers (especially on lower ticket items) may also take a jump.
The point is that a sub-par economy doesn’t mean that every offer produces poor results. There are plenty of campaigns that will either be unaffected or actually may become more profitable. The key is to test new offers and watch your metrics very closely.
If you take the time to look for and test the right offers you may find the silver lining in a recession.

Recapping Three Recent Trade Shows
By Steve Kilberg
Director of Business Development
I had the chance to attend several trade shows recently (first SES NY and more recently LeadsCon and ad:tech San Francisco) and thought it was very interesting (but not at all surprising) to see some common themes come through at each event. The most consistent topic at every show was that the Internet industry is continuing to go through dramatic change. As a matter of fact, the only thing that is constant in this industry is that change is and will continue to be the norm.
Here just a few topics that came through loud and clear at each show:
• Advertisers want quality over quantity. Advertisers are becoming more and more focused on getting the appropriate value out of the leads they generate (or pay others to generate for them). Rather than constantly adjusting their metrics and reducing payouts to compensate for poor lead quality, they are looking to work with companies that can help them generate higher quality (and better converting) leads. They would much rather pay more for leads that turn into customers than ones that simply take up their time and never convert.
• Compliance: This topic is incredibly important and those who ignore it are going to find out very quickly that market forces are going to push them out. Basically any company (or individual) involved in running non-compliant ad campaigns will likely find themselves under an investigation by the FTC or a state regulatory agency. This reality will force some companies out of business and ultimately allow those companies that are doing things the right way to rise to the top.
• Incentive Marketing: This is related directly to the previous two topics. Many advertisers who have found success with incentivized leads in the past are seeing lead quality drop significantly and are dramatically lowering payouts or simply no longer accepting this type of traffic. This is yet another example of the market finding its level. As advertisers see a type of traffic or marketing initiative begin to provide a lower ROI, they will either find ways to adjust their metrics accordingly or stop accepting the traffic.
• Merger, Acquisition, and Investment Capital: Although M&A activity may slow down in 2008 (as many people predict primarily because of the current US economic downturn) the fact that venture capital money continues to enter the space is a positive sign. Anytime you have a large influx of investment money coming into an industry it is likely that other money will follow. Although some of the valuations in previous deals ‘may’ have peaked, the reality is each new deal will be based on its own unique set of circumstances, because there is no single multiple for every transaction.
I would also like to add a special note regarding LeadsCon. I really want to congratulate Jay Weintraub and his team for putting on such an outstanding inaugural event. The session topics were extremely interesting and definitely valuable to everyone in the online lead generation business. I think it is a great addition to the growing list of conferences revolving around online advertising and recommend it highly.

Questions from the Fans
During the season, we receive an incredible number of comments and questions from Team Chaos fans from around the world. This week, we decided to respond to a few of the most often-asked questions.
When will Lou Difulvio get back on the ice?
After a long and storied career with the Chaos, rumors abound that Difulvio will hang up the skates for good this summer. Taking a page from Bret Favre, Difulvio is taking his time in making a decision, but may make an announcement within the next few weeks. Sportswriters, coaches, players, and uninterested bystanders throughout the league have weighed in on the question. Typical comments included: “He’s not getting any younger.” “What more can he accomplish?” and “I thought he retired last year.” ESPN’s Barry Melrose spoke the most eloquently on the subject. “In my opinion, he’s one of the toughest defensemen to ever lace up the skates. His rookie year in 1955 was something to see. What? Lou Difulvio? Who the heck is that? I was talking about Lou Fontinato.”
How do the players stay in such amazing shape during the off-season?
Not surprisingly, Team Chaos takes off-season conditioning very seriously. The training staff has developed a truly cutting edge program for the players to follow. The team recently replaced all of the office chairs at team headquarters with Ab Loungers. In addition, the team is bringing in a variety of renowned fitness experts to hold fitness classes in the office gym this summer. First up will be Richard Simmons with an updated version of his classic “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” aerobics routine. Jon “Ringo” Ringhofer seems to be especially excited about the class and has been seen wearing his 1980’s leg warmers to the office ever since the class was announced.
Are there any exciting prospects to keep an eye on for next season?
Rookies Will Charland and Lyric Black are two of the team’s top-rated prospects and both have a good chance to make the team next season. In addition, two long shot prospects to watch are Shane Graper and Vince Chavez. Each is said to be taking beginning skating lessons, but with their world class athletic ability, they could be ready to contribute next season.
Where can I get tickets to watch the Team Chaos Softball team this summer?
The excitement around Team Chaos Softball has exploded in the last few weeks. Requests for tickets have been coming in to team headquarters in incredible numbers. The league is expected to announce the season schedule in the next two weeks. With fans already camping out at the box office, tickets are expected to disappear within minutes. The team is contacting a number of TV networks in hopes of signing a deal to televise Team Chaos Softball games, so all of the fans will be able to follow every pitch this season. While none of the bigger networks has shown any interest yet, early conversations with a local cable access channel in Osnabrock, North Dakota have been very positive.
Stay tuned to your weekly CPA Empire® Affiliate Newsletter for the latest updates on Team Chaos Softball and don’t forget to visit www.HockeySkate.net for off-season coverage of the 3-time champion Team Chaos Hockey team!

An early spring tale: how to defrost a cold AdSense channel
In 2004, Google began providing AdSense channels which give webmasters and advertisers the opportunity to view detailed reporting about specific pages or ad units. By assigning a channel to a combination of pages or ad units, it is possible to track their performance separately, providing powerful data for use in optimization and other efforts to improve results.
Initially, the number of channels available to each publisher was fairly limited (16), but in 2005 this number was increased to its current level of 200. With so many channels available, it is possible for publishers to monitor their performance data in a variety of ways.
One of the greatest benefits of this level of monitoring is that it often allows webmasters to identify trouble spots in their AdSense programs. Oftentimes, the first sign of trouble may be an unexpected decrease in overall revenue. To investigate the problem and find a solution, it’s necessary to:
• Analyze each channel’s patterns individually to determine which channels are most responsible for the drop in revenue.
• Study the channels’ behavior in the weeks preceding the revenue drop to see when the problem began.
• Examine the web pages containing the ads most involved in the decrease and view their source code to verify that it is properly formatted.
Oftentimes a decrease in performance may have to do with the source code for certain ads. While Google has made it easy to configure AdSense and to set up channels, each webmaster is still responsible for making sure the underlying code is correct. If any part of the syntax is wrong, the ad won’t generate revenue.
In order to work as intended, an AdSense ad code must include several key elements:
• Comment tags () surrounding the ad attributes (height, width, etc.)
• A semicolon and line break following each attribute of the ad
• A Javascript call whose src attribute points to the file show_ads.js.
Utilizing AdSense channels can be a huge help in keeping a close eye on your ads’ performance and help track down any issues that may keep your program from delivering the best results possible.

Broadening Horizons
Last week, Team Chaos Head Coach George Avery mentioned some exciting plans he had for the team this off-season. The sports media has been buzzing ever since, with wild speculations about what the unorthodox coach might have up his sleeve.
Will Team Chaos be moving to the NHL next season? Is George Avery coming out of retirement to play again? Would the players be going on tour with a new version of The Lion King on Ice? Will every player be asked to live together in a mountain cabin for MTV’s The Real World – Breckenridge?
When the announcement came out that there would be a special press conference at Team Chaos headquarters this week, national and international media representatives descended on Westminster, CO in hopes that the secret plan would finally be divulged.
The atmosphere in the press room was filled with electricity as a Team Chaos representative took the podium and made this special announcement. “In the fine tradition of Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, and Will Ferrell, Team Chaos will add a new chapter to their growing sports legend by expanding their repertoire this summer. The team will look to take their success on the ice and transfer it to the playing field with the first ever Team Chaos Coed Softball Team!”
After a moment of stunned silence, the reporters let loose a barrage of questions. Can the members of Team Chaos, their razor sharp hockey skills honed to perfection through years of intense training, make the transition to the complex world of slow pitch softball? What position will Lou Difulvio play? What color will the jerseys be? Are the Chaos prepared for the intense competition of the Westminster Coed Recreational Softball League, renowned throughout the sports world for crushing the spirit of unprepared teams?
In response to the flurry of questions, Coach Avery could only talk about his excitement about trying a new sport. “This will be a big change for our players, but I’m confident we can make the transition fairly quickly. I hear the game is a little different, but we’ll lace up the skates and be just fine.” Informed later that softball is played on a grass and dirt field, Avery noted “Hmmm, I guess we’ll have to come up with some other kind of footwear. Maybe some sort of ‘shoe’ would make sense. I’ll do a little research online and see what I can find out.”
With spring training already underway, the team is already trying to make up for lost time, putting together a roster and getting out on the field to learn the intricacies of this new game. The roster will include some familiar names, along with a number of new faces, looking to become a part of the team and add a new chapter to the Team Chaos legacy.
Stay tuned to your newsletter and www.HockeySkate.net in the weeks ahead for more information about Team Chaos and its new Coed Softball Team.

Three-Peat Celebration
This week, the Chaos continued celebrating their historic third consecutive championship, with a tickertape parade in downtown Denver. Riding on the top of a double-decker tour bus, the players waved to hundreds of fans who lined the streets during lunchtime on Monday. Asked to comment on how it feels to be this close to a 3-time championship hockey team, one excited onlooker remarked “I’m just heading over to grab a sandwich during my lunch break.”
“Well, I’m sure we would have gotten a bigger fan turnout if the parade was actually sanctioned by the city…or was announced ahead of time. The fact that we had to share the bus with a tour group from Norway may have confused our fans, as well.” commented Head Coach George Avery.
Following the parade, the team is planning a trip to the White House for a photo-opp with the President. A team official noted that “While we haven’t actually received our official invitation yet, we know the President is a busy man and we’re sure it is just lost in the mail.”
With another successful season coming to a close, what lies ahead for the Chaos?
Rookie Joe Lochi is still gearing up for the launch of his reality dating show, “For the Love of Joe”. “We’ve had a few setbacks now that the writers’ strike is over,” said Lochi. “The network said something about being able to develop quality programming now that the writers are back, so they have put our show on ‘permanent hiatus’ for the moment. My agent assures me this is a Hollywood term used to describe outstanding shows that will be on the air very soon.”
Another Chaos player will be taking to the airwaves this summer, when season-long healthy scratch Lou Difulvio joins the cast of “Dancing with the Stars.” Joining Difulvio on the show will be a list of marginally known celebrities, including the actor who played Huggy Bear on the old TV Starsky & Hutch, the rhythm guitarist from the 80’s rock band Loverboy, the first player voted off of Survivor Season 2, and the Denver Broncos superfan known only as the Barrel Man.
Defenseman/General Manager Steve Richter will once again be picking up his tennis career, as he considers another run at Wimbledon in late June. “I hear Pete Sampras is considering a comeback,” said Richter. “I’ve been looking for a rematch with him ever since our five set marathon at the U.S. Open in 1990.”
Coach Avery also hinted at some interesting plans he has for the team during the offseason. “We’re working on a little surprise for our players and fans,” said Avery. “I can’t comment on the specifics yet, as the details are still being worked out. But, we should have an official announcement within the next week or two. It’s going to take Team Chaos to a whole new level.”
Be sure to keep up with your weekly Affiliate Newsletter and www.HockeySkate.net to stay up-to-date with the latest Team Chaos news and updates.
