The Streak…Comes to an End
After more than 20 straight victories, spanning two seasons, the Team Chaos winning streak finally came to an end last night against the rival Team Raid. Over the course of the unprecedented streak, the team overcame incredible obstacles including: a rash of groin injuries, rival teams bringing in ringers from the NHL, player suspensions, blizzards, floods, and the incredible pressure of keeping their legions of fans happy. Last night’s game presented the biggest challenge yet, as the Chaos took the ice so shorthanded they barely had enough skaters to field a team.
Early season injuries took Steve Kilberg and Joe Lochi out of the lineup, while the team was also missing Scott Richter, and to a lesser extent Lou Difulvio, among others. As game time approached, the team had only six skaters suited up for the game. In contrast, the Raid had pulled out all the stops and brought nearly three times as many players to the game, sensing that this was their opportunity to finally beat the Chaos.
As the game began, spectators could only watch in stunned amazement as a handful of Team Chaos skaters faced charge after charge of the seemingly endless supply of players the Raid threw at them. Like the legendary Spartans before them, the Chaos stood before the onslaught and never flinched or gave ground. All-Star Goalie Pat Avery epitomized the team’s resolve, turning aside over 40 shots, refusing to succumb to the offensive barrage.
Slowly but steadily, the overwhelming weight of numbers began to wear down the Chaos. Despite exhaustion and injury the team refused to give in. Even as news spread throughout the stadium that another bus load of Raid skaters had arrived to reinforce their team, the Chaos never wavered.
As the game unfolded, every Chaos fan in the overflowing stands began to realize that they were watching something truly amazing. A game that would attain legendary status. One they would tell their grandchildren about in years to come. A game where a handful of fearless skaters stood up to an overwhelming force and refused to break, no matter the score.
As the final buzzer sounded fans and skaters alike looked to the scoreboard and saw that the Raid had earned the victory by a score of 3-2. There was initially silence in the stands as the score sunk in with the fans. Then, a capacity crowd all took their feet and began to cheer. A rising chant of “Chaos! Chaos! Chaos!” shook the arena as the fans acknowledged the incredible display of teamwork they had just witnessed. Television cameras captured grown men openly weeping in awe at what the Chaos had accomplished. The crowd grew so loud that local police descended on the stadium, believing a riot was in progress. When fans regaled them with stories of the game, several officers were so moved that they joined the crowd in cheering Team Chaos – a true team of the ages.
