Team Chaos - We're Number 2!

After last week’s shocking decision to cancel the playoffs, a stunned Team Chaos came into last night’s game with one thing on their minds – victory … and revenge … and the possibility of celebratory cheeseburgers after the game. With this kind of passion, focus, and hunger, there was little chance that anything would stand in the way of the Chaos clinching second place in the final standings.
When Team Chaos met Ben Franklin Elec. for the first time last week in their historic rivalry of the ages, the Franklins were able to emerge victorious over an injury depleted Team Chaos. Despite a week to recover, the team was still shorthanded as they took the field last night.
At the pregame rally, Team Chaos fans proudly wore their “We’re Number 2!” shirts and giant foam hands with 2 fingers raised in victory. The Chaos Glee Club led the crowd in renditions of famous #2 songs “Just the Two of Us,” ”Be My Number 2,” and wildly popular sports song “Rock and Roll Part Two”.
The game got off to a quick start as the Franklins put five runs on the board in the first inning, thanks in part to some questionable calls from the umpire. A lesser team would have easily crumbled under the pressure of this sudden deficit, questionable officiating, playing without the usual full team, a capacity crowd in the stands, an overflowing press box, and no cheeseburgers in the dugout. But, Team Chaos is no ordinary team.
Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Chaos put all of the distractions and challenges behind them and started playing their game. From spectacular fielding and stellar pitching to picture perfect hitting and aggressive base running, the team simply took the game of slow-pitch Co-ed C Rec softball to a new level. Among the highlights was the team’s first double play of the season, multi-hit games from every regular player, and a one-walk performance from star pitcher Cydney Moora.
With their flawless play, the Chaos quickly erased the early five run deficit and never looked back. The game came to a sudden and thrilling conclusion when Joe Lochi drove a double to the wall, scoring Molly Petullo from first base with the 17th run of the game, stretching the Chaos’ lead to 10 runs. The final score of 17-7 doesn’t really indicate the level of dominance the Chaos demonstrated after the first inning.
In the champagne soaked locker room, various Team Chaos players reflected on the inaugural season of the softball team.
“Nobody remembers who won the Super Bowl last year,” said manager Kacy Manning. “But everyone knows that Denver came in second place in the AFC West during the regular season. Now we share in that kind of sports immortality.”
“I have a lot of favorite second place memories,” said Molly Petullo. “When Al Unser finished second in the 1967 Indy 500, Jean-Philippe Gatien winning the silver medal for men’s singles table tennis at the 1992 Olympics, and when the Toros came in second to Rancho Carne in “Bring it On”.”
With the softball season coming to an end, attention now turns to what sport Team Chaos will take on next. Among the candidates being considered are Soccer, Kickball, Water Polo, Rugby, Frisbee Golf, Hacky Sack (or Footbag), and Cup Stacking.
